Clarity Liao turns jealousy into bright, restless pop on ‘Lose,’ the focus single from her debut EP ‘Dear…’

Jealousy is rarely an emotion anybody is particularly proud of. Clarity Liao has wisely decided that doesn’t mean you can’t make it catchy. On ‘Lose’, the emerging singer-songwriter turns romantic insecurity into bright, restless pop, allowing jealousy, comparison and rejection to collide with a track that sounds considerably more carefree than its narrator feels. As the focus single from forthcoming debut EP Dear…, it captures exactly the kind of contradiction that makes uncomfortable emotions interesting.

The song begins with Liao fearing that someone she cared deeply for was falling for another girl. That person quickly becomes a projection screen for every insecurity: she appears to possess everything Liao worries she lacks, turning romantic disappointment into an exhausting exercise in comparison.

What makes ‘Lose’ compelling is that Liao doesn’t pretend to be above any of it. There is jealousy here, alongside obsession and what she jokingly describes as her own “madness”. Instead of cleaning those emotions up for public consumption, she allows them to become part of the fun.

That wasn’t originally how the song was supposed to sound. Liao initially imagined ‘Lose’ as a sparse, Adele-inspired piano ballad, but the introduction of upbeat drums, electric guitar and brighter production changed its personality completely.

It was the right decision. The contrast prevents ‘Lose’ from sinking beneath the weight of its own heartache. Instead, the production captures how irrational romantic anxiety can feel from inside it: thoughts racing, possibilities multiplying and every tiny interaction suddenly becoming evidence in a case nobody asked you to investigate.

Gradually, though, something shifts. Beneath all the comparison sits the more painful possibility that the relationship Liao wants simply isn’t going to happen. Acceptance doesn’t arrive as some enormous revelation; it emerges through recognising that wanting something intensely cannot make it yours.

That emotional honesty makes ‘Lose’ a fitting introduction to Dear…, a seven-song collection structured around intimate musical letters. Moving across indie pop, R&B, bedroom pop and contemporary singer-songwriter territory, Liao appears less interested in establishing one fixed genre than finding the right musical language for each confession.

Having written songs since she was seven and later served as principal songwriter for Navillera, Liao isn’t discovering songwriting with her solo work so much as placing herself directly at its centre.

‘Lose’ understands that letting go rarely begins with graceful acceptance. Sometimes you have to survive the jealousy, comparison and slightly embarrassing overthinking first. Fortunately, Clarity Liao has found a way to dance through it.
