Olivia Rodrigo surprised Coachella 2026 crowds by joining Addison Rae for ‘Headphones On’ and debuting her new single ‘Drop Dead’ live
Coachella weekend two just handed Olivia Rodrigo the perfect stage for a surprise. As Addison Rae wound down her Saturday set in Indio, she paused to ask the crowd if they had heard “any new music this week.” The audience had. And so had Rodrigo, who emerged from the back of the stage to make the question irrelevant.
What followed was a two-song sequence that functioned as both a celebration of a rising pop friendship and a de facto preview of the next chapter in Rodrigo’s career. The crowd, already primed by Rae’s set, had no idea what was about to hit them.
Two Songs, One Moment
Rodrigo stepped out first for “Headphones On,” Rae’s breakout single that has become one of the defining pop earworms of early 2026. The two traded verses and collapsed into the chorus together, the kind of effortless chemistry that does not get staged on short notice. When the song ended, Rodrigo turned to the crowd: “Coachella, how much do we love Miss Addison?” Rae responded with a wink: “Oh my god, I might just drop dead.” The line was not an accident.
“Drop Dead,” Rodrigo’s first new single in over a year, had landed just that Friday morning alongside a music video directed by Petra Collins. In the clip, Rodrigo roams the Palace of Versailles, drifting through gilded rooms before grabbing a pink guitar and tearing into the song. The visual is lush and slightly unhinged in exactly the way her best work tends to be. Within hours of release, the track was generating significant streaming traction, with fans dissecting every lyric for clues about the album it previews.
At Coachella, Rodrigo and Rae performed the song together as a duet, Rodrigo strutting to the front of the stage and delivering the live debut with the kind of confidence that makes it clear she has been sitting on this one for a while.
A New Album and a Big Spring Ahead
“Drop Dead” is the opening move for Rodrigo’s third studio album, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love,” set for release on June 12 via Geffen Records. She recorded the project once again with producer Dan Nigro, the longtime collaborator behind both “Sour” and “Guts,” the back-to-back critical and commercial triumphs that made her one of the most consequential pop artists of her generation.
Before the album arrives, Rodrigo will pull double duty on “Saturday Night Live” on May 2, serving as both host and musical guest. It will be her hosting debut. She previously appeared on the show as a performer alongside host Keegan-Michael Key in 2021 and again with Adam Driver in 2023, but the hosting chair is new territory. Given what she just pulled off at Coachella, she will be fine.
