Rosé teases new single ‘New Trick,’ out Sept. 17, with a Dave Meyers video shot entirely on the iPhone 18 Pro
Rosé is back, and she is holding a lollipop. On Wednesday, September 10, the Blackpink member and solo star teased her next single, “new trick,” confirming a September 17 release with a brief clip posted to Instagram. It is her first new solo music since Rosie, the 2024 debut album that rewrote the record books for K-pop soloists, and the tease alone was enough to send her fanbase into overdrive.
The teaser is all mood and misdirection. In the 15-second clip, a blonde Rosé cradles a purple-burgundy lollipop wrapped in “new trick” branding before the candy flips to reveal the words “Shot on iPhone 18 Pro.” The snippet offers a few seconds of audio, including the lyric “Lovesick, I’ll pick my heart off the floor / New trick, watch this, watch this, ow!” A distorted electric guitar and layered vocals give it a punchy, slightly gritty edge, a sound fans were quick to call her most Olivia Rodrigo-coded yet.
A Song Born Two Days After the Met Gala
Despite that gritty surface, Rosé insists the song is anything but heavy.
This song was written during a hectic week, I think two days after the Met Gala in New York,” she told Vogue. “Ultimately, we successfully wrote something so not sad, and I think it is possibly the cutest thing we’ve ever made together”
That tension, gritty guitars wrapped around something sweet and playful, tracks with the candy imagery and hints at a lighter chapter after the confessional emo-pop that defined Rosie.
The visual is a marquee moment in its own right. The “new trick” music video, directed by Dave Meyers, was shot entirely on the iPhone 18 Pro as the newest entry in Apple’s long-running “Shot on iPhone” campaign. Meyers is one of the most decorated directors in the business, with credits spanning Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, and Kendrick Lamar, and he also helmed Blackpink’s recent “Jump.” The campaign has previously recruited pop heavyweights including The Weeknd, Olivia Rodrigo, and Lady Gaga, placing Rosé in rarefied company.
Riding the Momentum of a Record-Breaking Debut
The timing is no accident. Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on September 9 at its “Surprise and Shine” event, with the phones hitting shelves September 18, one day after the single drops. Rosé appears in Apple’s first promotional imagery for the device, and the new Pro models introduce a mechanical variable aperture to the iPhone camera for the first time, alongside a triple 48MP system and up to 8x optical-quality zoom. For a brand partnership, it is unusually seamless, the release date and the product launch locked in step.
Rosé arrives at this moment with enormous momentum. Rosie debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with more than 100,000 equivalent album units in its first week, making it the highest-charting album by a K-pop female soloist at the time and earning a Guinness World Record. Its pre-release single “APT.,” a collaboration with Bruno Mars, topped the Billboard Global 200 and became one of the defining pop crossover hits of its era, while “Number One Girl” and “Toxic Till the End” further cemented her solo identity.
“new trick” also lands amid a remarkable stretch for Blackpink, with all four members releasing solo material within weeks of one another, even as the group continues its global touring campaign. That convergence has kept the quartet at the center of the pop conversation heading into 2027. For Rosé, though, the assignment is narrower and clearer: prove that Rosie was a foundation, not a fluke. If the teaser is any indication, she is approaching the follow-up with a wink and a sharpened hook. The trick, it seems, is that there is no trick at all, just an artist who has figured out exactly who she is.
