The Strokes announce four Australian dates for February 2027, with Beck, Courtney Barnett and Promiseland joining the ‘Reality Awaits’ run
The Strokes will play four Australian shows in February, their first headline run in the country since 2022 and the clearest sign yet that the Reality Awaits cycle is being worked as a full album campaign rather than a legacy victory lap. Announced Thursday (Sept. 24), the three-city east coast run opens Feb. 13 at Brisbane Entertainment Centre, moves to two nights at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on Feb. 16 and 17, and closes Feb. 20 at Sydney’s Centennial Park. Secret Sounds and Live Nation are producing.
The Sydney date carries extra weight for promoters. It launches Sydney Summertime, a new outdoor concert series, with Beck, Courtney Barnett and Promiseland all on the bill. Barnett and Promiseland, the project of Johann Rashid, who is signed to Julian Casablancas’ Cult Records, support in Brisbane and Melbourne.
The Numbers Behind the Booking
Australia has been a dependable market for this band. Reality Awaits, released via Cult Records and RCA, debuted at No. 10 on the ARIA Albums Chart in July. Six of the band’s seven studio albums have reached the Australian top 10, including a No. 1 with 2011’s Angles. That is a track record that justifies arena capacity rather than theaters, and it explains the two-night Melbourne hold.
The routing also reflects a campaign sequenced with unusual discipline for a band this deep into its career. The Strokes have just wrapped the North America and Japan legs, with UK, European and South American dates still to come before they reach Australia. Festival plays this year included Coachella, Bonnaroo, Outside Lands and Summer Sonic. By February the record will be roughly seven months old and the live show fully broken in, which is when a catalog act tends to sell best.
The Rollout, and the Tickets
The announcement was set up the way tours increasingly are now, cheaply and through the fanbase. Digital signage reading “Reality Awaits Australia 2027,” in the album’s typeface, appeared overnight in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley and was photographed and posted to Reddit before any official word landed. Albert Hammond Jr. had already told followers the band would be back soon, not long after their Harvest Rock appearance in Adelaide last year. By the time the dates went live, the audience had done a chunk of the marketing.
Presales begin Monday (Sept. 28) at 9 a.m. AEST for artist, Mastercard and Vodafone customers, running until noon Tuesday. General sale follows Tuesday (Sept. 29) at 1 p.m. local time.
The album underneath all of this is the band’s first since 2020’s Grammy-winning The New Abnormal. Produced by Rick Rubin, recorded in Costa Rica and finished in studios around the world, Reality Awaits was preceded by the singles “Going Shopping” and “Falling Out of Love.” Earlier this month in Hollywood, the band gave album track “Tyrants of the Mellow Moon” its live debut, a signal that deeper cuts are entering the set rather than being held back for the faithful.
That matters commercially. The Strokes formed in New York in 1998 and have spent a quarter century in the shadow of Is This It, an album whose songs still function as the ticket-selling engine. “Last Nite,” “Reptilia,” “Someday” and “You Only Live Once” will be in the set, and everybody involved knows it.
The Australian run is a test of a simpler proposition. Whether a seventh album, two decades past the debut that made them, can hold an arena on its own terms alongside those songs. The routing, the venue sizes and the two Melbourne nights suggest the band and its promoters believe it can.
