On Saturday, August 22, Zara Larsson and PinkPantheress finally shared a stage, performing their “Stateside“ remix together for the first time in front of a sold-out crowd at All Points East in London’s Victoria Park. The surprise crossover became one of the standout moments of a packed festival day headlined by Lorde.
The setup was pure festival theater. Larsson was midway through her own East Stage set, tearing through tracks like “Midnight Sun“ and “Lush Life,” when she brought PinkPantheress out to a roar. The two matched each other’s energy with synchronized movement, animated choreography, and soaring harmonies as the crowd erupted around them. For a song that had only ever existed as a studio pairing, the live version arrived fully formed.
A Remix That Grew Into a Moment
“Stateside” was never supposed to be this big. The track originated in PinkPantheress’s expanded Fancy That era, resurfacing on her star-studded Fancy Some More? remix album, the companion piece to the Mercury Prize-nominated mixtape Fancy That. Larsson added her own vocal to the remix, and what began as a bonus-cut collaboration slowly built into a genuine crossover, buoyed by the internet momentum that follows nearly everything PinkPantheress touches.
That momentum has been quietly gathering for months. The pair first teased their chemistry at Coachella back in April, when Larsson appeared during PinkPantheress’s guest-heavy set alongside Janelle Monáe. Larsson had also been performing “Stateside” on her own throughout the year, including a solo rendition at Oakland’s Fox Theater in March. Saturday was the night the loop finally closed, the two voices on the record standing side by side to sing it.
Two Artists on Hot Streaks
The timing suits both of them. PinkPantheress used All Points East to keep pushing her own material forward, debuting the Yves collaboration “Soap” live for the first time and threading in fan favorites like “Pain,” “Passion,” “Bury Me,” and “Break It Off.” She even worked “Stateside” into her own set, giving the sold-out park two chances to hear it in a single day. It was a reminder that her fast-moving, internet-shaped pop translates to the festival main stage without losing its intimacy.
Larsson, meanwhile, is deep into one of the strongest runs of her career. The Swedish pop veteran released her fifth studio record last summer, spinning off singles including “Pretty Ugly,” “Midnight Sun,” and “Crush,” then followed it in May with the remix album Midnight Sun: Girls Trip, a guest list stacked with PinkPantheress, Shakira, Tyla, and Robyn. She has even picked up an unlikely admirer along the way, now counting Mick Jagger among her fans.
There was something fitting about the whole thing unfolding on a predominantly female-led bill, with Larsson performing ahead of Lorde and a lineup that included Oklou, Audrey Hobert, and Rose Gray. The “Stateside” moment did not feel like a one-off stunt so much as a snapshot of where pop’s center of gravity sits right now.
