Fire in the Mountains returns to Blackfeet Nation land in 2027 with Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Nevermore, Russian Circles and more
There is no music festival in America quite like Fire in the Mountains, and its 2027 return is already shaping up to be one of the most ambitious editions yet. The immersive heavy-music and cultural-arts gathering, staged in the Montana wilderness in partnership with the Blackfeet Nation, has revealed the first wave of its 2027 lineup, led by iconic Canadian post-rock collective Godspeed You! Black Emperor and acclaimed American heavy metal band Nevermore. The festival runs July 22 to 25 at the Red Eagle Campground on Blackfeet Nation land near East Glacier, Montana.
Organizers unveiled the announcement with characteristic reverence, framing next year around a theme. “2027 will be known as the Year of the Eagle,” the festival wrote in an Instagram post. “We’re excited and proud to announce the first wave of artists to perform at Fire in the Mountains 2027.” Alongside Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Nevermore, five more acts are confirmed: Russian Circles, Stormkeep, Invunche, Rwake, and Buffalo Nichols, a lineup spanning post-rock, symphonic black metal, sludge, Chilean mythology-inspired extremity, and blues-laden storytelling.
More Than a Festival
What separates Fire in the Mountains from the standard festival circuit is its purpose. The event is organized in genuine partnership with the Southern Piikunii, or Blackfeet Nation, and staged on the Blackfeet Reservation, blending diversified heavy music with art, educational workshops, adventure, and cultural food in a setting designed for personal growth and connection to the land. It is a wilderness experience as much as a concert, campers pitching tents among the sweet pines beneath mountains named Rising Wolf, Bison, and Red.
The mission runs deeper still. The festival operates in partnership with the Firekeeper Alliance, a 501(c)(3) organization focused on suicide reduction and mental wellness serving community members within the Blackfeet Nation. Fire in the Mountains is explicitly dedicated to raising awareness of mental-health wellness in Indian Country and in music and artistic communities, aiming to bring catharsis to the forefront and build a community bound by music and guided by nature. In keeping with that ethos, the event is alcohol-free, an unusual and deliberate choice that reframes the entire experience around presence rather than excess.
Topping a Landmark Year
The bar for 2027 is high because 2026 was a landmark. This year’s edition featured an iconic performance from a reunited Neurosis, alongside standout sets from Enslaved, YOB, Sigh, a 20th-anniversary “Between Two Worlds” set from Abbath and Ice Dale, plus SubRosa, Amigo the Devil, and Full of Hell. Organizers acknowledged the weight of following it.
“While we are still processing the immense experience that was Fire in the Mountains 2026 at Red Eagle Campground, we are excited to peel back some of what we have been working on for 2027,” they said, promising “bands with a legendary command of soundscapes and artistry, to returning fast riffing metal legends, post metal icons, symphonic black metal rippers, musical purveyors of Chilean mythology, American sludge darkness, and blues laden storytelling.”
That curatorial specificity is the whole point. Fire in the Mountains has built a reputation as one of the most important and distinctive festivals in North America precisely because it refuses to chase the obvious. Booking Godspeed You!
